Te Pokohiwi o Kupe – Revisiting Past Voyages explores some of the connections between the present generation of Te Ahi Kaa of Pokohiwi (those who descend from the settlers of Wairau Bar) and their connection to Aotearoa / New Zealand's first people.

Curated by Dr Peter Meihana, Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Apa Ki Te Rā Tō, Rāngitane, Ngāi Tahu.

This evolving exhibition will focus on significant voyages and feature works created by local iwi artists and those held in public collections.

Several public programmes will be taking place with the exhibition.

In 2019, New Zealand will mark 250 years since the first meetings between Māori and Pākehā during James Cook and the Endeavour’s 1769 voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand. Tuia – Encounters 250 will acknowledge this pivotal moment in our nation’s history as well as the extraordinary feats of Pacific voyagers who reached and settled in Aotearoa many years earlier.
